Last of the GBG 2025 ticks we made. Check the opening times - 3pm on a weekend - 4pm on other days.

Lots of friendly single blokes who had taken their dog for a walk.... single bar that opens out to the rear on the way to a sheltered (concrete) beer garden.

This was the fifth pub I visited over two days. Everyone dispensing Wye Valley. My local is a Wye Valley. So I was looking forward to the Bass which is permanently on.

Alas, my glass was half filled before the barell was prounced dead.

A very good Butty Bach was thrown towards my very bored taste buds.

Still fairly basic although some chump has grey glooped many of the wooden fittings and put hipster strung filament lights in, so the classic ambience has been stifled somewhat; the right hand room remains the least unspoilt. Beer is as good as ever though, 2x Wye Valley and a super Bass (NBSS 4) on my visit. 7.5

Utterly old school (or ‘unspoilt gem’, depending on your preference), the only thing that's changed here over the last 40-odd years is the ale. Two rooms: a nice lounge on the right, which was surprisingly empty. The décor in here included mounted prints of jazz musicians and some little jazz band figurines. Room has bar access via a serving hatch. The left hand room extends back quite far, dog-leg style. A dart board was situated to the rear, though we were unable to play due to a band setting up. Unique Mona Lisa print bead curtain spotted, along with numerous wall-mounted instruments, framed prints and a collection of jugs on a gantry. Outside toilets fitted into the scheme of things nicely. Four ales on, Wye Valley HPA, Bass, Kingsdown, and Butcombe - good quality across the board. We got a friendly goodbye from the bar. I really liked this one though I guess I should mention that a couple of others in my party were a little less effusive. If you’re in Abergavenny this is the one to do, in my opinion. Rated 8
