Blue Scrumpy left this review about Black Lion Hotel

Situated towards the top end of the High Street, the Black Lion was much more welcoming than the Red Lion. It is quite a large space with a bar to the front left, a smaller lounge to the front right, and another reasonable sized room with a pool table to the rear. Off to the right of there is another small room with board games, which leads to a small outdoor yard where I would imagine the smokers gather. A staircase also leads off to a first floor restaurant. As pubs go, this one is quite large.

Reputedly one of the oldest pubs in Wales. Cask ale appeared to be back, as a handpull was clipped with Purple Moose Glaslyn. I decided not to order it, but had no reason to believe that it wasn't on.

I've been in worse pubs but have I ever been in a worse Good Beer Guide pub?

I think not.

Fine coaching house dating back centuries. Bare walls and a number of rooms - a front drinking room, with Storage Wars at a volume that scared the dog. A back games room.

The reason for the negative review. No cask. Three pumps all the wrong way. I asked if they had delivery issues. No was the reply. I asked if it was a heavy weekend. No was the reply. Eventually, I was offered "cask doesnt sell".

Begs the question how it ever got in the Guide, yet it seems to have been in for some time.

Keg Brains Barry Island IPA or Tetleys the only choice.

A real eye opener.

An aged coaching inn and the interior retains a decent amount of olde worlde charm, with two rooms accessible via the front porch. The right-hand side was closed on my visit (though it looked to be a pool/darts room), the left side hosted the bar with undressed stone walls and a further, more modern-feeling area, beyond. Being a GBG21 entry I was pretty disappointed to find no cask, and no real sign of it having been available lately either. So a keg of Brains Barry Island sufficed. I also overnighted here - the quality of the rooms was a little careworn but fine for the price.

Give this a miss if you want a good meal, its consistently bad, you would get a better meal in a transport cafe

It's well and truly open now with Doom Bar and Rev James on offer in my afternoon visit. Was a very pleasant place to stop and have a swift one whilst family are walking around town
