Will Larter left this review about Rose & Crown
This is an attractive white painted building on the main road through Nawton, its good looks slightly marred by a small stand of scaffolding to the right of the front door at the moment. A multi-roomed pub with pictures of jockeys on the walls and a nervous dog that barks at children; it's nervous because it's so small. The bar, made of wooden pillars with stone infill, sports two hand pumps, one at each end. The far end has Old Rosie cider and at the near end is Theakston XB, not in very good nick. The licensee told me he gets cask beer in pins but he still can't sell enough of it to sell before it becomes like it is today: lacking condition, slightly murky and likely to succumb to an infection tomorrow. He says the keg beers sell because they're reliable. (Reliably cold and fizzy, I thought but didn't say.) He told me he would like to have two or three cask beers on, so we discussed some possibilities. I suggested trying the local brewery, whose beers are appearing in quite a few pubs locally. Theakstons have name recognition in these parts but XB is an odd beer that is not going to be to many people's taste, being a blend of Old Peculier and Best Bitter. I wished him luck.
