My latest visit to this excellent cask ale emporium found seven beers on the bar, and the usual problem of distinguishing them in the gloom on a bright sunny day. Eventually I spotted a DDH NEIPA, a hazy blonde, a vanilla porter and three more beers well known to me and not to my taste. Which left me with a very good Timothy Taylor Landlord, the best beer of the day (NBSS 4) and only £3.90 for a pint. A slight drop from my previous 9, for only having one beer on that I like (we all have our foibles). Point of interest: the place where you might choose to hang your coat is helpfully labelled in dialect: coituks. Don't you just love South Yorkshire?

A roadside pub with a dusty, somewhat downtrodden outward appearance, but like most of us it's beautiful on the inside. The bar counter is actually situated on the front wall, with its back to the traffic, and after the bright sunshine it initially felt a little gloomy. But I received a friendly greeting from the young man behind the bar who was busy cleaning the pipes before pulling a new barrel through. This meant there were temporarily only five real ales on. Despite being tempted by Acorn Gorlovka, I reminded myself that it was 6% abv and this wasn't planned as the last pub of the day; I went for Abbeydale Hopback, one of their somewhat anonymous pales. There were two others from Abbeydale, plus Landlord and a beer from Nightjar called You Had Me At Hazy. I liked it here, and would have happily spent longer than the time it took me to drink a half. There were some musical instruments on the walls, and some good music in the air, with a pretty decent selection of songs in the background. I noticed an interesting fireplace, with a huge curved beam holding up the chimney. I found myself making plans to come back here some time soon.

Absolutely superb Sunday lunch spot and a great selection of beer.

Six of us and 3 kids descended on the huntsman in November, looking for a decent Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. If you like roast beef and all the trimmings, this is the place for you. Really nice staff, decent food and a roaring fire, what more could you ask for?

Highly recommended, make the effort.

Friendly local. Great mix of real ales, especially White Rose ales (when on).
