Probably my first visit since my review from 2016 below. There are four hand pumps on the bar, with Black Sheep Best, Oakham Citra1 and two from local Bradfield brewery, their ubiquitous Farmer's Blonde and the almost as popular seasonal Belgian Blue. I went for the Black Sheep, which was a little below standard (NBSS 2.5). It was fairly quiet just before 2pm on a Saturday, with only a handful in, though a few others arrived as I was supping my pint. (The Three Merry Lads a short walk up the road was so busy I gave up on getting served and came back here.) With the pub empty the background music of 80s disco hits was inescapable, but as people arrived it faded into the background. There's a board outside advertising the opportunity to "run your local", but there are food offers and happy hours, plus a new year party, which suggest it is in fresh hands already, and on asking it appears new operators have been in for quite a while but Stonegate haven't taken the old sign down yet, and won't let them take it down themselves. With a bit of time to spare before kick off at Hallam FC down the road in Cross pool, I had a half of the Citra too - this was a solid NBSS 3.5.

This is a community pub right on the edge of Sheffield, where the Peak District begins, but easily reached from the city centre on the 51 bus, whose terminal turning circle is a couple of minutes' walk away. We received a friendly welcome on the blustery and wet autumn evening when we were here, and the Timothy Taylor Golden Best that we drank was in good condition, though a little cold. The barman said it's because of the cellar, but it's an unusual cellar to impart such a severe chill to a beer unaided. The other beers were Landlord and Tetleys Bitter. If you've come this far out of town it's only polite to pop along the road to the Three Merry Lads, as we did, and there are a few others worth a look in on the way back too.

The above was from 21st October 2013, when I awarded 6 out of 10. A more recent visit found Timothy Taylor Landlord, a house beer which was simply Tetleys Bitter rebadged, and Bradfield Farmers Blonde. The beer is still cold, and it now costs a whopping £3.70 a pint. We only called in as we were passing on a cycle ride, but if I'd made a special effort to come here I'd have been pretty disappointed by that.
