Will Larter left this review about The Rivelin
Although this was among the first pubs in Sheffield that I visited, when I lived for a few months in Hillsborough and my daughters were of an age to appreciate a pub garden with play equipment, this is my first visit in more than a decade, prompted by the news that the pub is closing this week, and the licensees moving to the Bulls Head in Ranmoor, a couple of miles away. This is a food oriented pub, as it was in 1998, though in those days it sold a decent pint of Tetleys. Now there are four hand pumps with beers from nearby Bradfield brewery. My half of Farmers Ale 3.9% was not very good, a little murky if truth be told. The Pale Ale 5% was better (NBSS 3, £4.20/pint) though none of this brewery's beers ever come close to brilliant. The local press have reported that the pub will become residential, and the leaseholders are quoted saying that their landlords describe it as an Achilles Heel in their farming business. (Spelt "heal" by the journalist, but we know what they mean.) It'll be interesting to see if the pub returns under a more extractive lease.
