My previous visits to this Camra heritage pub have been at busy (or smoky) times, but a spur of the moment decision to call in on an early winter afternoon gave me a better appreciation of its merits. The beer is maybe a tad more expensive than is general in Sheffield, but my pint of Kirkstall Three Swords was very good (NBSS 3.5, £5.40). This part of Sheffield is well worth a visit for cask beer aficionados, the Porter Brook now joined by the Beer House, Ecclesall Ale Club and more recently the No.3 in Sharrow as real ale outlets, and this one is probably the best for quality.

I've been back several times to the Lescar since my review below, and although local beers are still few and far between, there is a noticeably more adventurous beer policy (see photos of hand pumps on latest visit). The pub appears to be very popular with students and ex-students and the beers are always in good condition. Definitely better for beer than the nearby Banner Cross and Porter Cottage, and infinitely more comfortable than the Beer House. Best alternative locally would be the Ecclesall Ale Club.

Definitely improved since my last visit, several years ago - in fact it must have been more than seven, because it was full of cigarette smoke at the time. There's now quite a few beers arrayed on half a dozen hand pumps, with an unusual selection from London (Sambrooks, Trumans) and Cornwall (Sharps), plus Bass and Black Sheep. Service was friendly, though it was a surprise that my 25-year-old daughter was asked for proof of age, especially as she was only drinking Pepsi! It was quite pleasant here, but it would be nice to see some local beers on offer.
