A short bus ride out from Penistone, this one has the character of a country pub, but without perhaps the scenery to make it a destination pub. Certainly it was fairly quiet here on my Saturday afternoon visit, but I got a friendly welcome and the beer was fine. Two Bradfield beers: Blonde and Pale, and my half of the latter was fine. There's a fireplace to the right with a kitchen range installed, and some pottery on the mantle shelf which I found interesting. This would make quite a good start for a crawl back towards Pensitone, with the Huntsman and the Crystal Palace not far away. I found out the hard way that there are actually two bus stops, with the frequent 21 not stopping here despite being marked as such on Google maps: you need to walk about 150 metres further on as the bus out terminates and then does a quick circuit around Birks Avenue to emerge opposite the first bus stop without stopping there before going back to Barnsley. Never mind: it's only about a 15 minute walk to the Huntsman.
