Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Old Kings Arms

Reasonably large pub at the bottom end of Town Street with a convenient bus stop opposite for buses into Leeds.

Inside, the large room has bare boards and a few cosy corners. Ceilings are quite low, apart from a stage area where live music is performed and where there is also a large screen. Test match cricket was being shown whilst we were there on both the large screen and smaller TVs scattered around the pub. All were on mute with music playing instead. There was also a fruit machine. Signage indicated that there was a games room upstairs.

At the bar, there were 3 Kirkstall beers - Bitter, Pale Ale & Three Swords with a guest beer which was Craven Brew Hay Baler. Craft beers were Belhaven Black, Sierra Nevada California IPA, Kirkstall Virtuous & Beavertown Neck Oil. With real cider discontinued, the draught cider was Inch's.

Food is served but this appeared to be predominantly wings. Quiz nights are held every Thursday and a darts competition was also being promoted. I assumed the dartboard is upstairs as there was no sign of it in the bar.

There were a few people in whilst we were there including a couple of businessmen in suits having lunch, an elderly couple falling asleep in a corner and some other solo drinkers. With musical equipment on the stage, one guy appeared to be putting his instruments away with a woman supervising. Whether or not he had performed the night before, I'm not sure.

I quite liked this pub. It was the better of the two we tried in the centre of Horsforth.

An old pub relatively well renovated by Greene King although a lot of grey paint has been used. The outside says Greene King but there is some doubt if they still own it. Six pulls from local breweries plus Tetleys, no Greene King beers just standard kegs. The beer quality was not too bad and there's a collection of Yorkshire pump clips on the bar back. Pretty much food led with a Thai restaurant, it's family friendly so make of that what you will. Big screen for sport and has live music regularly.

A good sized GK pub, standing in a prominent position at the beginning of Horsforth main high street. You step up into the pub from the main front entrance and you can observe a decent display of Victorian tiles on both walls up to dado height. The interior is traditional and the main bar area, can be found on the left hand side. This good sized bar area had a distressed painted dark blue panelled front, with an oak counter top. Original red brick foot rest and a grey tiled floor surround.
The right hand side of the pub was open plan with a half partitioned corner room, featuring a timber fireplace and buttoned back leather bench seating. The rear of the pub housed a dining area serving Thai food. There was also a narrow seating area along the side of wall of the restaurant area, with plenty of light from the side windows. Five handpumps on the bar with four pumps in use, serving Ilkley Alpha Beta, GK Yard Bird, Howard Town Super Fortress and Kirkstall Three Swords. I went for the Three Swords which was top notch.

Very smart looking building from the outside, but once you step inside it needs a bit of a refurb, especially the carpet and the Gents toilets. It's been opened up into one large room, but with a separate area for a pool table. There's a further area at the rear in an extension that is used mainly for dining. As it's a regular in the GBG including 2011 I was a little disappointed to find that my choice of cask ale was Tetleys Bitter or York Yorkshire Terrier, hardly unusual beers for around here. There was another handpump with a clip turned round, another not in use and two more with real ciders. Having said that, my pint was well kept and we got a friendly welcome from both the barmaid and a couple of regulars stood at the bar. We'd probably call in again next time we're in Horsforth, but it's by no means a must visit pub.
