White painted and double fronted this is the poshest and of course most expensive of the four Sherburn pubs. There is a public bar to the left, small with banquette and benches at wooden tables with chairs and stools. The walls are exposed stone, it has screens and dart board plus a framed picture of “odd fellows”: Frank Spencer, Laurel & Hardy, Rigsby, Sid James, The Two Ronnies and the Young Ones. Another frame has a selection of 1970s TV cops. A blackboard tells me they have a Cask Ale Club with ales at £3.20 a pint but only on a Sunday. The public has two pulls, a mild from Great Newsome (lovely), and the less lovely Bradfield Farmers Blonde, the dining lounge to the right is larger and has Taylor’s Landlord on the single pull. A T-Bar in each bar has a basic choice. Through the back is a snug with a pool table, machine and darts, also with seating of course and access to a common services corridor and the rear garden.

Great food and a welcoming atmosphere. A good choice of menu with reduced prices for senior citizens on week-days, the perfect place for old friends to meet up. Nothing is too much trouble for the friendly staff, who are happy to vary the standard fare to accommodate special diets. Its easy to get a wheel-chair in through the back door. A warm place to sit with an extra cup of coffee if you've missed your bus - they run only every hour through Sherburn.
