The Black Star was another lively pub on our Saturday evening visit to Stourport. It is a canalside pub and you enter from a narrow patio alongside the canal. The small entrance area has the bar immediately in front of you and this area can get packed when people are drinking on the patio.

There are rooms with tiled floors either side of the bar. There is also an upstairs area in the left-hand section which doubles as a dining/function room. Further along the canal, there is also a large garden area which also appeared very popular on a Saturday evening.

Cask ales are served from handpulls in both of the main rooms. Another couple of handpulls on the entrance side of the bar dispense ciders. Having not been to Stourport for many years, I was looking forward to visiting this pub, as one of just 2 pubs in the town that feature in the Good Beer Guide (the other being the Holly Bush which I visited last time I was in town).

The cask ale selection did not disappoint. Regular beers are Wye Valley HPA, Butty Bach & Hopfather & Ludlow Gold. Guests were Hobson's Town Crier, Woodcote SPA, Green Duck Labrynth & Big Red Machine & Fownd Big Dipper Bitter. The two cider handpulls were both clipped with ciders from Barbourne with the Rhoobarb & Custard Cider on and a Fruit Salad clip turned round. There were several beers I hadn't tried, but my attention was diverted to the cider, as it was one that I hadn't had before. Keg ciders were Thatcher's Haze, Cloudy Lemon, Blood Orange and Apple & Blackcurrant & Robinson's Flagon.

Food was being served and despite us being hungry, the menu didn't look like it offered what we wanted and with lengthy queues just to get a beer (or cider) from the bar, we guessed there would be a long wait. So, we didn't indulge.

As Stourport pubs go, this one and the Holly Bush appear to be the best and both are worthy of the Good Beer Guide. Our visit was a bit too noisy for my liking but I enjoyed my cider and would have stayed for a beer had we not had another couple of places still to get to.

Attractive canal side pub. 6 ales on - 2 from wye Valley and 4 from the Green Duck brewery. I went for the Green Duck Session and it was fine. A must do in Stourport.

Ha - my local, so I suppose I ought to review.

The current owners have just celebrated their 10 year anniversary. Its no exaggeration to say they saved the town but doing the basics very well. Exceptionally kept beer that is just about the cheapest I find outside spoons. Butty Bach currently £3.80. Decent food, cobs, pork pies. Live music everyday of the weekend.

There was simply nowhere to go for a decent pint before they took it over. As a result of the "grey pound" coming back out, other pubs have come from the ashes (Swan), upped their game considerably (Hollybush, also in GBG). We even have a micropub and a brewery in town.

The building is actually three terraced together - a front cottage. An old chapel and where the kitchens are, a former school. Decent outside patio.

Now a freehouse, its still has close ties with Wye Valley. All theirs on and usually LocALE breweries such as Ludlow Gold and Fownd from Kidderminster.

Always busy. It shows the demand is there for a well run pub.

An impressive Wye Valley owned pub by the canal, bigger than it looks from the roadside as there’s a long side alongside the canal, it’s a popular venue for food and drink. One long room with a central servery, there are different beers at each end, four from Wye Valley one end next to a low T-Bar of dross, the other end has six pumps with a selection of smaller brewery beers including Castle Rock and Hobsons plus more keggy stuff. Simply decorated inside it’s quite neat and relaxed, possibly the best pub I visited in Stourport, although the Bird in Hand may be better.

The locals refer to this pub as part of the Stourport triangle, incorporating the Swan and the Holly Bush for a mini beer crawl. This pub certainly fulfilled our expectations, ten handpumps with nine in use on this visit. You enter the pub midway down the canal side street. The layout consisted of a the mid section bar area as you enter.
The left hand lounge area was mainly for dining, leaving the right hand side lounge area for drinking. The young barmaid was very welcoming and handed out a couple of tasters, I went for the Ludlow Stairway. The pub also has fresh cobs and pies.
