Originally The Talbot, this inn dates from the 16th Century. It’s actually a stone building which has had a mock-Tudor makeover some time in the last 100 years. It dominates the main square in the town centre. There is a car park and a limited amount of parking at the front, and there is a nondescript garden at the back. It offers B&B and good pub grub at a fair price. The food was well cooked and served with a smile, indeed the staff were generally very welcoming. The main bar has a flagged floor and forms the front of the public areas, and there is a separate carpeted dining room at the back where dogs are not allowed. The décor is cosy, helping to give it that county hotel feel. Three ales on, Fursty Ferret and Badger Bitter from Hall and Woodhouse, plus a guest. I had the Fursty Ferret which was in very good condition. I like it here – well worth deviating from the A303 to find.

Visit in late Spring 2013
Very much aimed at food end of market, but does have Hall & Woodhouse beer offerings so not all keggy
Car park, with free on street parking as well
This is an old building, the bar / restaurant is a rambling area, nooks & crannies, with some stone flagged flooring
We were mainly there to eat, food was fine, as was the beer
Would I go back? Yes, and next time I will pay more attention
