A beautiful old town centre pub on the market square, the King and Queen is an old coaching inn parts of which date back to the 15th Century. There is an old date stone in the back marked "WL1677". The pub business was taken over by the Sun Brewery in the 19th Century, then was taken over by Ushers before being sold to the present owners who have, sadly, let the pub go to rack and/or ruin. The clientele appear mostly to come from the rural yob element, while the over-loud jukebox makes conversation difficult, although I dod hear a group of WAG-lookalikes describe the pub as "classy". The staff are not friendly, and I needed to correct the barman's arithmetic in order to secure the right amount of change.
A tilt at real ale culture in a lager-lout environment, there were 3 ales on. I had the 6X which was just about OK. I shall not be rushing back, and although it may be worth including for a swift half on a crawl, there are better pubs nearby.
