A 17th Century inn in a small town just off the main Salisbury-Southampton road. There is a large car park at the rear, though getting into it is tricky in larger cars. The car park has a couple of electric car charging points. There is a lawned garden with wooden benches and chairs, and it has its own duck pond. There is a small paved terrace with a covered smoking area. A separate, more modern block houses the B&B accommodation. The pub has three discrete bar areas. The main bar at the front is a twisted L-shape, wooden floorboards, with an open fireplace at the apex and a large TV screen at the short end. The bar counter is opposite the fire. There s a much smaller seating area at the side with tables for informal diners, and there is a more forma restaurant at the rear. Dogs are welcome, and the landlady was pleasant and engaging. Locals were quite chatty and friendly. Draft ales on were Downton Honey Blonde, Stonehenge Heel Stone, Flack’s Double Drop and Proper Job, all in excellent condition. Also available were Madri, Guinness, Hofmeister, Pravha, Coors and Sharp’s Cider. This was a fantastic chance find, definitely worth deviating from the A36 to come here.
