A bog standard Wethers wannabe. Open plan and on two levels with a raised area at the rear. 4 handpulls on the bar with beers from Marston's range. Reasonably cheap but dull.

The name of this huge barnlike drinking establishment, and the presence of a chilled stillage behind the bar, are to fool you into thinking there'll be something interesting to drink. Despite a plethora of hand pumps on the bar there are only three real ales on, all from the Marstons stable. It's popular enough, but I wasn't prepared to join a scrum at the bar to find out what the beers were like.

After a £200 000 refurb, in April, the Gate has reopened as Calder & Hops.
