Will Larter left this review about The Shears Inn
A good looking building with some stained glass windows, and the date 1773 visible between the upper front windows, but the interior had been somewhat knocked about, with the bar counter facing both ways even though the front room was now one room rather than two. My half of Tetleys was pretty poor (NBSS 1.5) but in the absence of an alternative what do we do? In fact, this pub was definitely on its last legs, with planning permission having been granted for conversion to a dwelling, with two more detached houses to be built alongside, and the people running it were barely going through the motions. It closed as a pub a matter of weeks after my visit.
This place had a bit of history, with a Luddite action having been planned here against Rawfords Mill, between Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton, in 1812. This would explain why the gable ends of the pub had a repeated drawing of a man wielding a large hammer, as the Luddites would have done when attacking the mill and its modern machinery.
