Rob Hunter left this review about The Volunteers

Very busy at the time of my visit on a Wednesday afternoon in February, at around 2:30pm. I just about managed to grab a seat in the back room where the pool table is located. Three handpulls with two on and the other reverse clipped. The offerings were Craven Pale and SPA, the latter of which set me back a very reasonable £1.70 for a half.

It's a fairly small pub, traditional but tidy, dark wood, and a clean carpet in the back room. The front room was standing room only, well saying that there wasn't even room to stand really unless you want to mingle very closely with the locals.

I can only imagine how busy this place must get at a weekend.

Glad to have tried it but it's not somewhere I'd feel the need to rush back to.

Old Boots left this review about Volunteer Arms

Small characterful pub behind the Cavendish although with even older customers and more gormless staff. Plenty of original features, it would be a gem if there was real ale. Fairly narrow with a front and back room, bench seats and brown wood. The walls are literally plastered with photos of mainly First World War soldiers, medals and memorabilia.
