a pretty basic but lively locals pub that was busy and good fun on a Saturday night with a mixed and interesting range of clientele. A few small brewery ales on which was a nice surprise, though mine was a bit farty. Pool table, darts, jukebox, a typical community boozer and for me it was a nice contrast to other venues in Hebden.

Visited on Saturday as part of the Calder Valley real ale trail. Looks like a traditional pub from the outside, in contrast to its neighbours Nightjar and Vocation & Co. There were customers blocking the doorway, seemingly oblivious to the fact we were trying to get in. Once we managed to squeeze through, you enter into a small room to the front left where the bar is, which had three of the five hand pumps on, serving Wild Swan by Thornbridge, Zenith by Cross Bay and something by Wadworth. The White Swan took our fancy but one of our drinks was warmer than it should have been so would suggest turnover isn't that great and nobody bothered to pull it through before serving.
The front two rooms look more traditional though opened out, with stone walls, but to the rear of the pub it feels a bit more mixed up, almost industrial in parts, with part exposed brick and part plastered and painted battleship grey. One corner of this back room contains a jukebox, fruit machine and dart board. It feels as if someone ordered a load of stuff that they felt should be in a pub and stuck it all in this one corner and said "that'll do lads" and left it there.
I paid a trip to the gents and the two urinals are made out of cut out barrels with the water cistern above also formed from a barrel (see my photo). To be honest I found this the pub's most interesting feature. Bizarrely a big fat chap next to me was at the other urinal and I heard the camera click noise on his smartphone. I at least had the decency to ensure the toilets were empty before taking my photo, and I wasn't actually mid-pee at the time.
As we left I noticed the fireplace in the other front room was stuffed full of rubbish. Overall I felt this was a bit of an odd place, probably more for the locals, and the issue of the warm drink was the final nail in the coffin for my chances of wanting to return. Glad to have tried it but I can't say more than that really.

Pleasant little locals pub with a small front bar and a larger space behind. A couple of handpumps with Black Sheep bitter and Copper Dragon Golden Pippen when I called in. The Golden Pippen was a good pint. Handy for the station which is where I was heading. Worth a visit for one and I'll call in again next time I'm in Hebden.
