After a series of modern-style bars in the centre of Halifax, it made a refreshing change to come across another more traditional pub. The Upper George is approached through a courtyard with tables for outdoor drinking. Inside, it is quite a dark space with seating arranged in different sections around a central bar.

It's a Greene King pub, with their IPA on as standard. Their False Nine & Morland Golden Hen were also on. Guest beers were Ossett Excelsius, Goose Eye Chinook Blonde, Phoenix Black Bee, Stancill Sumo & Acorn Se7en. I ordered the Acorn beer, which was a pale ale. Returning from the toilet, there were 3 halves on the counter all having the same appearance. One was claimed by another mate of mine, whilst we weren't able to distinguish which was my Acorn beer and which was another mate's Stancill beer, such was the similar taste. Even trying the other confirmed Acorn beer provided no help. Either way, I know I started the Acorn beer, but whether I finished it or whether I moved onto the Stancill, I'll never know! I also missed out on the CAMRA discount that is available.

For a Greene King pub, the guest beers make this a decent alternative to the modern bars in Halifax town centre.

A Greene King pub with lots of interesting beers, not a thing I say often, the pub has the feel of a traditional locals pub and indeed seemed to be well attended with more than a few characters. I counted eight handpumps with just a couple of GK beers on , the rest were guests, I went with a Rudgate Valkyrie which was of a decent standard. Another solid Halifax Pub.

Up an alley with tables outside to the front,The interior winds around a central bar and is all very traditional. There is good wood panelling and some decent stained glass, you enter into the tap room, with a seperate pool room,a rear room then a side lounge with red leather banquettes before returning to the tap room.A good place to catch televised sport, most sections had a flatscreen but on mute or dark when nothing is on.
Although owned by Greene King it is easy to ignore their Old Golden Hen and IPA at the bar with guests on my trip of Stancill's Tom's Mild,Rudgate Valkyrie,Astrid Summer and Viking together with Bridgehouse Tequilla Blond (NBSS 4) .I suspect this pub often carries Rudgate ales so this would be a good place to sample some of their wares .I found this to be a very good and traditional ale house and would gladly return.

Accessed via either Crown Street or Upper George Yard, this is a Greene King pub, but don’t let that put you off.
Spending most time out front, I’d plumped for the Bridgehouse Tequila Blonde, recorded as being ‘very nice’.

A good traditional back street boozer with plenty of local characters frequenting the place, all of which were friendly and chatty. The sort of pub you would pop in for a quick drink and end up staying for a couple of hours. As Steve mentions below, the outside space on a hot day was a real suntrap. I went for the Bridgehouse Tequila Blonde, which was decent and the prices were reasonable.

Cunningly hidden down its own yard off Cheapside this is indeed a surprising good ale house.
Internally it is multiple spaces around the central bar area that you enter into including a separate “Raise your game” room housing a pool table. Traditional pub decor with flat screens in each section and the odd fruit machine dotted about.
But a really good feature with this one was the spacious outside space to the front of the pub in the lane which was catching the midday sun and providing a very pleasant alfresco drinking space which made some of the southerners in our group think we were in Brighton, not Halifax.
The bar supports two banks of four hand pumps and seven of these were in operation for our visits. It I is a Greene Kings house but that was only evident by IPA and Old Golden Hen clips and the other five were dispensing three from Rudgate Brewery in the form of Viking Golden Ale, Astrid Summer Fruity ale and Valkyrie American Pale Ale and. Then Stancill Toms Mild and an excellent Bridgehouse Brewery Tequila Blonde.
Really liked it here but then the sun did help enjoy the outside space.

A surprisingly good ale house hidden behind shops. Access is down a tiny alleyway off Crown Street or through a yard off Cheapside. Once inside you find a fair-sized pub with a series of opened-out rooms round a central bar with an old-fashioned (rather than historic) feel. It is also difficult not to like a pub that is playing Atomic Rooster! Most importantly there is a good range of ales (supported by a vast collection of pump clips) - on this visit two from Millstone, a Little Critters and a Phoenix, with a couple of Greene King to make up the numbers. Nicely basic (in a good way) and definitely a serious drinkers pub.

Hidden down a small alleyway and hemmed-in from all sides, there's a decent sized pub here that's rather tidy. It’s an island bar with a number of discrete, comfortable, carpeted and burgundy banquette seating areas off, and a separate pool room. Greene King owned, so surprised to see eight ales on the go with a pretty good line-up of mainly micro and small regional beers. I went for the Settle Jericho Blonde which was fair (NBSS 2.5) but lager is clearly the seller here and I did wonder whether they’re over-stocking the cask. Friendly barman and a good bit of bar chat going on, the place clearly has a regular clientele. Well-worth a look as part of an extended crawl.

This was our 7th pub of 10 on our Thursday afternoon Halifax pub crawl and must say i was very impressed with every aspect of the pub. There were 8 cask beers all functioning and on 4 of these had labels attached giving more details of the beer. Without doubt worth a visit if you are in the area.

cracking traditional pub wedged in an alley with front and back entrances. Had the feeling of an intimate town centre locals local with plenty of custom not long after its 11am opening time. seven real ales and these were an outstanding selection for a Greene King pub. i’d actually say this is now a must visit if you’re in Halifax. my pint came to £2.90, not bad at all these days.
