First time I've been to this brilliant Camra heritage listed Ossett pub when it's not been full to bursting with either football or rugby league fans, so it's really nice to have a chance to appreciate what a lovely pub it is. Eight hand pumps, with White Rat doubled (see photos), but I went for Half Moon Dark Masquerade, an old favourite that I hadn't seen for a few years, and it was as good as I remember from when it was on regularly at the Kelham Island Tavern. As has been said about the Big Six, you haven't done Halifax if you haven't done the Three Pigeons.

Our first stop on a day out of Halifax proved to be just about the best of the bunch in my opinion. This is a pub run by Ossett, which is not too far from Halifax railway station.
You enter into a fantastic lobby area from where there are two front rooms either side, the bar itself to the left and a third room also off to the right. From there a corridor leads to a third room on the right and another room at the end. The lobby also has a skylight featuring three pigeons.
There are 4 regular cask ales from Ossett - White Rat, Butterley, Yorkshire Blonde & Silver King, with 3 further beers from their range - Fernandes Railway Nut & Citragen & Rat Queen Rat. Ciders were represented by Weston's Old Rosie & Lilley's Pineapple Cider. My Railway Nut was a subtle mild with a nutty taste and was a very good way to start the day.
With 12 in our party, we easily filled the room at the far rear, which was lined with pictures of old Halifax. All of the 5 rooms seemed to be a roughly similar size.

Good beer and heritage is a good mix and this pub has bags of both, an Ossett owned pub, there were six of their own beers across nine handpumps but I went for one of the guests in Toms Tap The Mighty Stout which was mighty good, another must visit pub in town.

Grade II-listed and with a CAMRA heritage rating of ***, this has a stunning Art Deco interior shown on CAMRA’s website, with original bell push buttons, geometric lino floor, the star being the terrazzo floor to the lobby.
My half of Ossett White Rat was good.
This is a must-visit pub at a national level, but the use of Autovacs lowers the score.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Three Pigeons
A very fine old pub, just south of the town centre, and now in the care of Ossett Brewery. The entrance between the feature bow windows leads to a splendid octagonal lobby, with the main bar counter on one side and doors to the side rooms of the unspoilt interior on several other sides. All very traditional in terms of furniture and décor, and exceptionally characterful overall. Six of the brewery's own beers - including the Silver King (£4.20) - and a couple of guests plus a cider from a total of nine handpumps.

Another pub with a wonderful interior, however this time it’s an Art Deco one. An attractive stone and brick exterior with large bay windows to the front the central entrance leads you into a striking octagonal drinking lobby with an impressive floor but an even more impressive Art Deco ceiling. This forms the hub from which five distinctive rooms radiate as well described in the reviews below. Each room has a different decor but Art Deco artwork in each room pulls the theme through the pub. There is a couple of flat screen tele’s in a couple of the rooms that was showing the current European football championship but they are small enough not to detract too much from the wonderful pub decor.
There are eight ale pumps on the bar which are dominated by Ossett Brewery beers ( it’s their pub) and for our visit these included Ossett Butterley, Silver King, White Rat, Yorkshire Blonde, Best Bitter and Maximum Reward ( a collaboration with the Maxim Brewery). And then Rudgate Battleaxe Best Bitter and Tom’s Mighty Stout were the two guests. I went for the Ossett Best Bitter as it would have been rude not to and it was on fine form as you would expect. Another must visit when in Halifax.

Art Deco, multi roomer with an octagonal lobby leading to rooms in all directions.
I timed it wrong (and was warned). Dont go just before Halifax are at home - rammed with football fans but did start emptying out as KO approached.
Stopped me from properly exploring and taking photos, but as the only traditional pub in the GBG2024, I'm bound to come back if I am ever in town.

On the edge of town, not far from the station this is an absolute must visit.A fine brick exterior gives way to an outstanding art deco interior one of the best I've ever seen. The bar is to the left of a quadrant ,beautifully picked out by mosaic tiling off which are three rooms and a corridor to two further rear rooms. The two front rooms are wood panelled, with immaculate green leather bench seating and I will forgive the coal affect gas fires which were most welcome on a cold day.Original features abound,in a classic style.
The two rear rooms are smaller but also traditional with the one of the right including a darts throw.
Owned by Osset Brewery ,the ale line up on my Wednesday visit was their Silver King,Ossetian,Half Moon,Dark Masquerade,Butterly,Yorkshire Blonde and a perfect White Rat (NBSS 5) with guests Long Moor Pale and Small World Thunderbridge Stout.Great line up.
I don't often give full marks but this pub so deserves it. The barmaid was very friendly as were the other customers,it's a joy to behold and next time I'm in for a very long session.Perfect in every sense.

Amazing Art Deco refit pub (fitted by Websters in 1932) - unspoilt. Enter to an octagonal mosaic floored bar area with five rooms leading off; each one has its own character and many of the doors retain their original metal signage. As noted below, the ceiling in this area has been painted Trompe L'oeil with a blue sky, clouds and three pigeons, around the perimeter. They've even made sure to get period art in as well. Listed by CAMRA as an interior of National Importance. Owned by Ossett, five of theirs were on over eight pumps, with a couple of Rudgate guests. The Blonde and Voodoo were a little bit ‘first of the day’ but quite drinkable (NBSS 3 and 3). A range of cold bar snacks are available, so I went for a chilli scotch egg. Half a dozen classic codger locals queuing up with me outside for the 3pm opening time and I ended-up sitting with a couple of comedy old boys in the front right room who were getting stuck into the quiz in the back of the weird pub paper this area has. No music, just atmosphere. GBG'22 listed. A truly fantastic place, which everyone who likes pubs should visit at least once. Allow plenty of time for your visit because you won’t want to leave after one, that is for sure. 9.5

not much more to add to the other reviews, it’s a multi roomed pub where conversation rules and the beer is excellent. i enjoyed the Ossett beers I tried and they were good value. the bar lounge was a friendly place to sit for a while. Located between the station and the rugby league ground (apparently some irrelevant football side plays there as well?)
