I was intrigued by the façade of this pub when passing by on the way to the Wheatsheaf, and seeing that it was a Craft Union pub, decided to pop in on the way to the station. Unfortunately, the interior is not so pleasant, with tacky strings of lights all over the upper walls and corners, giving an impression of being trapped inside a Christmas tree. There are two hand pumps still sitting on the bar, but unused. We went for the John Smiths Smooth Crap (£2.20/pint), with the late Alan Winfield inevitably in our thoughts. I'm sorry to say that, apart from being very cold indeed, this was not as bad as some I've had, which is high praise indeed for this beer. I had an interesting conversation on the way out, when a couple of blokes sitting in the sunny space in front of the pub asked why I had been taking photos. One of them, hearing that we were on our way to the Great Western for a Bathams Bitter before our trains home, told us what a great beer it was, his favourite beer, etc. So why are you drinking Stella, I asked. The answer became clearer when we were charged £4.70 for a pint of Bathams 10 minutes later.

Holly mother of god, I decided to give the Old Still the swerve at 15:30 on a recent Thursday because it was a bit too early for karaoke, but it was very busy with the demographic I’d expect to see in a Craft Union pub. I walked past later in the evening when this party pub was still going strong, so I decided to pay a visit, which the bouncer had no issue with. The interior is L-shaped with an L-shaped counter that supports standard and premium keg, the two hand pumps were unused. There’s seating either side of the central entrance and up the left opposite the counter to the karaoke at the rear. Just after ordering half a generic lager a woman, who’d obviously had an interesting life, grabbed the mic and started a rendition of Black Lace’s Gang Bang. In order to avoid Rita, Sue and Bob I decided to knock back the pish and make a retreat.

A fantastic looking Georgian terraced building in cream render, with brick and pilasters. A nice crest stands above the pediment over the door and the words cafe bar seem inviting, when 'abandon all hope ye who enter here' are more appropriate. There is an L-shaped room in cream and olive greenish wood panel, with a token wall in red patterned wallpaper. It has a wood floor and small tiled fireplace. There is a pool table (indeed, the keep-off under 16s note on the wall was the only real art to look at, other than a drink poster) and dart board, along with a DJ booth. It is basic - indeed, i went to the loo to find the first sink not actually plumbed in. I didn't see a TV and the music came from the radio. The service was fine, sadly, the product less so - there was no real ale, so the usual keg stuff with a Banks's MILD that i congratulated myself for finishing (i DID drink worse later). The vista is one of a rutting ground that lies between the pub and the Betfred establishment and the mating call of 'EFF U' can be heard both in increasing frequency and volume. The ghosts of past occupants must be in torment.

The sign outside says Cafe-Bar and the front area looks a little bit trendy with wicker chairs and tables but no not a terribly sophisticated place. Dark with lots of noise, there's a pool table and darts board at the back, for your drinking pleasure there is a range of national kegs or something to drink straight from the bottle. A stern notice on the front door cautions us that the facilities are for the use of paying customers only – cripes!

Desperate, awful, what a shame for this lovely old building. Bland, uncomfortable.

Beer is undrinkable

This pub has just been taken over by a new landlord, it is still early days but he has put on entertainment, there is a disco in the week which I havent been to but I know the entertainment is wicked at the weekends. Friday night is karaoke and disco with just old skool soul, motown and northern soul music. On a saturday it is old music only everything from the 60's to the 90's, he plays some of those tunes you havent heard for ages and it is different each week. Definately a good place to go if you fancy a dance with your mates. Good crowd of people in the pub too.
