This pub was demolished in the early 1990s and a car showroom erected in its place. The image on the pub sign was that of William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), who had the misfortune to become involved in an ill-fated local project. Gladstone entered Parliament as a Tory in 1833 and after 1859 identified himself with the Liberals. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and three terms as Prime Minister.
