The large car park with a one-way system up the right-hand side of the Chef & Brewer run Drum and Monkey gives the game away that it is primarily a food pub. It was extremely busy with a pensioner aged crowd during a recent early Thursday afternoon visit, all of them were dining so there was a queue at the entrance by the ‘please wait to be seated’ sign. While waiting I noted that there are a mix of wooden floored and carpeted seating areas across the front of the pub and up the left opposite the long serving counter with a red tiled apron that runs up the right. There’s lots of exposed wood and brick which gives a rustic feel and on the rear wall is a large fireplace before more seating in the rear with views out of the windows into the beer garden. On the bar is a standard and premium keg range alongside four hand pumps that were drawing TT Landlord, GK IPA and C&B Brewer’s Pale, the Abbot was off. I thought the service was polite, and the food must be modestly priced to attract such a crowd, but this isn’t somewhere I’ll be visiting again.

Routine Chef and Brewer remarkably busy at 6pm on a weekday. Decent sized area as you enter occupied by locals using it as a pub, with the rest of the building set up for dining as you progress further back. Most of the bar area is furnished with high tables in standard GK style, hopeless if you are a wheelchair user, fortunately we found an unreserved table. Spot on TT Landlord prettily served, usual GK suspects on the other pumps.
Fine for what it is, and clearly has a respectable local following as well as those enjoying their freezer to microwave dinners.

Typical Chef & Brewer pub serving a choice of 4 ales. A decent pint of Silhill Blonde Star. I even remembered to get my Camra discount!

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Drum & Monkey
Attractive old main building with several more recent extensions surrounded by tidy landscaping. The multi-room interior has been partially opened-out and refurbished in the usual light Chef & Brewer style with a mix of furniture. Very much food-led, as you would expect, with about 2/3rds of the tables laid-up for dining. Substantial beer garden to one side. Four real ales on handpump: Abbot, Landlord, the local Silhill Blonde Star and Pennine Howzat IPA (£3.35, less 10% Camra discount).
