At the end of Southam's High Street is The Black Dog, which, according to The Lost Pubs Project, experienced a period of closure a few years back, but now appears to be thriving. Bright and clean inside, the ale front is generous, if perhaps, a little too generous towards one particular brewer (especially as WhatPub classes it as a free house) with a choice of Marstons Pedigree, Wychwood Hobgoblin, Marston Bitter, Banks Bitter and Marstons Longer Days - the latter continuing the reasonably-priced theme of the evening at £1.60 for a half. Another friendly welcome, and lots of bric-a-brac to look at the open-plan bar, including several of those 19th century British School paintings of over-large farm animals and cushions with images of Audrey, Elvis and Marilyn. Probably the nicest interior-wise and welcome-wise of the night (and busy like The Bowling Green and Old Mint), but marked down due to the ale choice.
