Graham Coombs left this review about The Trowel & Hammer

Neighborhood pub claiming to be the oldest in Lowestoft but you wouldn't know it from the tedious modern furnishings and decor. There are a few beams and bits of exposed wall if you look hard enough. The bar is in the middle, with a pool table to one side and a raised area to the back leading to the patio outside. Beer garden and kiddy area at the back of the car park. Not unpleasant though, and friendly enough. Ales were Ghost Ship, Southwold Bitter and Hobgoblin Gold, in fair condition.

Strongers . left this review about The Trowel & Hammer

The Trowel and Hammer is purported to have origins leading back to the 16th Century and signage on the exterior boasts of it being the oldest pub in Lowestoft. The split-level interior consists of a cosy street level bar at the front and a smaller top bar behind. A conservatory with set tables for diners is found at the rear.
The main bar houses a pool table and dartboard alongside a jukebox that was playing a couple of golden oldies for the enjoyment of the small weekday lunch crowd. A standard draught range was available from the bar that also supports three hand pumps. One of these was unused leaving Adnams Broadside and Sharp’s Doom bar as the cask ale options.
At the back of the pub beyond the parking area is a large well-kempt beer garden with children’s play area. At the rear of this garden access can be gained to the bench lined cliff that overlooks the North Sea.
Unfortunately, I found the barmaid to be impatient, which was surprising as she was hardly rushed off her feet. All things considered I still think this is a decent boozer and I will have no trouble returning when next in the area.
