The Old Stone Cross has a central J-shaped serving counter that supports standard and premium keg and two hand pumps. One was being used as a blue roll holder and the Bass on the other was ‘coming soon’. There was a Lilley’s Mango cider clip attached to the back bar, but I’m not sure if it was available. The interior is L-shaped with seating to the right, banquettes across the front and a couple of tables up the left-hand wall to a pool table and dartboard at the rear. Televisions throughout were airing muted Racing TV while some 80s background music played. Regular Friday and Saturday night DJ and karaoke is advertised. Out the back is a fully decked L-shaped beer garden with another television, giant Jenga and some covered seating at the rear. The ten or so locals in during my recent Wednesday early evening visit seemed to be enjoying themselves and I wasn’t made to feel unwelcome, but I saw very little to entice me back.

A Craft Union pub with two hand pumps - a fruit cider was on one, but no real ale was available. I went for a half of Staropramen, just for a change; it was ok. The pub seemed friendly and welcoming, though the sign in the opposite corner of the room which read "Pisshead Corner" might not seem welcoming to some. Next to it was a blown up map of this part of Staffordshire. On the end wall was a sandstone fire place with a brick surround. Not a bad place at all, if we can overlook the absence of real ale.

This one is clearly marked as a Craft Union pub which is a lame camouflage for the Ei Group (formerly Enterprise Inns). It's been given a very modern makeover into an open plan L shaped room with the bar counter on the corner in the middle and a pool table at the rear. There is a decked area at the rear. There were TV screens everywhere but with the sound off as there was a soundtrack of old pop songs playing.
The bar has two hand pumps which had Hobgoblin Gold and GK Old Speckled Hen turned. The Gold (£2.00) was in good nick but not quite as good as in the Penny Black.
I can't say I'd return here but I'd like to know how the Ei Group can throw a load of money at a pub in Tamworth and then charge half or less for a pint than they do in their London suburban outlets.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Old Stone Cross

Basic Craft Union sports pub, with an opened-out 'L'-shaped interior, plenty of TV screens and a pool table down the far end. Modern furniture and mostly unimaginative decor, although there are a few B&W local history photographs on display. Somewhat unexpectedly, there are two handpumps on one part of the counter, offering Doom Bar and a surprisingly good pint of Lancaster Bomber (especially as it cost just two quid, cheaper than the 'spoons).

There is little the modernisers can do to this pub, since the bar is built around a main supporting column which is in the middle of the building. There is no ground to expand on to, so if you want a pub, not a disco/restaurant, this is the place for you. Although it has lost its 'spit and sawdust' charm, and has been 'tarted' up a little, it is still a pub in the true sense of the word.
