Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Mercian
Looks to be right at the basic end of the estate pub spectrum as you approach and pass through the front yard, but the interior is tidy and (slightly) more comfortable than I expected. Plenty of 'industrial language', but the atmosphere was good natured and nobody seemed to mind a random stranger walking in. No real ale of course, so opted for the inevitable John Smith's (£3.30) from the limited range of keg options.

Whilst The Mercian is certainly not a picture postcard pub it does its best to serve the local community and Belgrave itself is not as bad as Ian Taylor alleges

Hi, I would like to counter attack Mr Ian Taylor's non recommendation of the Mercian Pub. Having moved to Belgrave 3 yrs ago, I was a little dubious of the area. I have since encountered many genuinely nice people who live on the estate, may it be in a private or COUNCIL HOUSE!!! I have frequented the Mercian on a weekly basis, and I can honestly say, I have not been in a friendlier pub. The landlady, Mrs Jacky Walker, is one of the most welcoming ladies I have ever met. How many landlords will take their older clientele home when the weather is bitterly cold? Mrs Walker does! This is MY community local, and as a lady of 46 yrs, I feel perfectly safe going for a drink by myself. Mr Taylor, you don't know what your talking about!

hi!im jacky walker, the licensee of the mercian and have been for nearly 14 years.the mercian is a community pub and frequented by a cross section of age groups.we are family orientated and community spirited.we have a varied entertainment agenda including pool, darts, dominoes, poker, karaoke,q
uizzes, bingo, charity events every bank holiday also local fund raising.the pub trade is hard now so i find it distressing that non regulars of my premises give negative reviews.as for the comment of council houses!how very rude.i`m proud to be the licensee of the mercian an proud to be a member the working class ,yes belgrave has usual estate problems as does the rest of the country.CLASSING yourself above it is not a solution.INVOLEMENT and caring!

the mercian pub has done a lot of charity for the comunity and most people in the mercian are friends and will help eachother out and the land lady is outstanding for helping anyone out.

I wont recommend this pub at ALL! This pub is in right middle of notorious Belgrave housing estate (famed for council houses, drunk kids and muggings) I havent visited The Mercian for many years since "incident" with one of regulars
