A disappointing and disappointed-looking pub. It's shabby on the outside, and although better-looking within, it's hard to overlook the absence of cask beers. Spotting the two naked hand pumps, I asked the woman behind the bar if they ever had any cask beers on. She seemed puzzled. So that's a "no", then, I thought but did not say. I had a half of very cold and almost tasteless Boddingtons; it's hard to reconcile this with what was one of my favourite beers of all time, back in the 1970s. The left hand side of this pub has been opened out into one room at some time, while the right hand side seems to have been unchanged, with its own bar counter and a pool table, surrounded by lots of trophies. Maybe three o'clock on a Monday afternoon is not the best time to appreciate The Duke, but it does seem a little bit depressed.
