A great village pub in a remote rural location, off the beaten track but nonetheless popular with walkers as well as locals. The pub is opposite the village church and forms part of the village hub. There are a few bench seats at the front plus a barrel of water for dogs, though there is no real boundary between these and the road. A small, triangular courtyard garden is at the back, and parking is limited. Inside, two front rooms have been conjoined to form the main bar, still informally divided into a drinking area and a dining room. Behind this is a smaller room, probably once a snug but now another dining area. There is another dining room the other side of the pub. Floors are a mix of timber and tiles, there is a Victorian fireplace in the bar and there is a thatched awning above the bar counter. Various rural bric-a-brac adorned the walls. We experienced an overall welcoming pub atmosphere, especially given the chatty landlord who took a interest and was passionate about his ales. These were Exmoor Ale and QPA, and the landlord was putting another one on while we were there. There was also a boxed cider from Sheppey’s on the bar, plus a tap range of Utopian Lager, Thatcher’s Gold, Carlsberg, Moretti, Sheppey’s 200 and Classic, and Guinness. Well worth a visit, but check opening times first as these are limited.
