Originally the Green Dragon, this former coaching inn still does B and B, and it also offers restaurant-style food. On a corner in the village centre, it is a vague triangle shape with no outside areas on the road sides. The main bar is in to parts, reflecting earlier rooms which have been conjoined, one end being a vertical drinkers’ bar with a couple of tables, the other a comfy area with sofas, armchairs and an open fireplace. There is a restaurant area at the back with a stone fireplace at one end. It’s an hotel, but also a really good local, complementing The Bear, opposite, from which it gets some of its beer. The barman was very welcoming, good company and knowledgeable. There was a group of locals in who seemed happy to see us, and there were a couple of dogs equally happy to see new people. Low ceilings, tiled floors and unobtrusive background music provided a pleasant atmosphere. Ales on were Otter Bitter, Exmoor Wicked Wolf and Exmoor Stag, all in perfect condition. White Hart Pilsner, brewed opposite, and Sheppey’s cider completed the top tier line-up, while a limited range of keg – Estrella, Guinness, Carlsberg and Thatcher’s Gold – were also available. A really decent traditional pub which is well worth a visit in its own right, and with two other pubs and a brewery tap nearby, a great place to include in a short crawl.
