A community pub in a working village just outside Wiveliscombe. There is very little parking at the front, and there is a fairly unkempt garden at the back, an unmown lawn with what looks like garden furniture from B&Q. For al fresco drinking, the small paved terrace at the side is a better bet. Inside, there are two main areas, one is the bar, the other a saloon and dining room without a counter, created by conjoining the two previous front rooms. The decor is dated, and the single-storey extension housing the bar looks jerry-built. Stone tiled floors and unattractive brick fireplaces complete the picture, making it feel more like a working men's club than a village pub. No cask ale was on offer. Otter Fresh, Guinness, Thatcher's Gold, Carlsberg, Shipyard and Estrella were all on keg, while bottled Doombar was also available. Food is locally sourced and freshly cooked, and this represents good value, especially the Sunday lunches. Dogs are not permitted inside. The landlady was friendly and helpful, and it's a surprise that the local community doesn't use the pub more, as the current usage rates make it uneconomical to open outside very restricted hours. It's not a bad place, but it has more reasons for me to avoid than to make regular visits even though I pass by regularly.
