A family run pub in a small secluded village, rather endangered through lack of custom; opening hours are already restricted. There is a small carpark at the front, and you enter the pub down through a concreted set of terraces that put me in mind of a crazy golf course like you used to get at the seaside. The terraces have various seating areas linked with ramps, ideal for prams, wheelchairs and Zimmer frames, all of which were in evidence during this visit. The interior was substantially rebuilt after a major fire in 2008, which the BBC suggested was deliberate but later apologised as this was unfounded. New structural timbers are in evidence, though the work around them appears to have been done by a sloppy DIY enthusiast. The main bar room is L-shaped, and it has a dining room at one end as well as various little nooks which allow for quiet conversation. There is B&B available, and food is basic pub grub. This wasn’t the most welcoming of pubs – the landlady struggled to raise a smile, while one of the bar flies was openly hostile towards us. Three pumps on the bar, two ales on – Butcombe’s Original and Abbott. There were also three ciders on pressure, two from Thatchers and Natch Original. Given the lack of welcome for strangers, I doubt I’ll make the effort again, especially as there is another, much friendlier, pub just up the road.
