An excellent town pub that has it all – beer, food, hospitality and character, while it has stayed an inn and still does B&B. Originally an ale house dating back to the 16th Century, it underwent a major refurbishment and extension in the 18th Century to become a coaching inn. It was improved and made over several times in the decades that followed, until its latest overhaul in 2013. The ground floor rooms have now been made as open plan as the structure allows, including making the back open and airy, while retaining the Georgian façade at the front. Open fires have been restored to working condition. Stone walls and timber beams are still evident, but it has been done well and does not look as naff as some of these places do. The stable yard now forms a courtyard dining area and a garden where drinkers and smokers can enjoy the open air. It wants to be a gastro, but frankly it's better than that. Food is very good, freshly cooked, decent portions, but I would say it's slightly over-priced. They haven't forgotten their locals, though, and they now serve cooked breakfasts and host both quiz nights and live music. Three real ales on draft, Gem and Hare from Bath Ales, and Will's Neck from Quantock, all in perfect condition. There was also a good selection of what I suppose I have to call craft beers, including Meantime, and some ciders. Dogs are very welcome, well behaved children are accepted, the barman looks a bit grumpy but is probably just over-worked. Definitely worth a visit.

Not been in for something like a year but it's an excellent small country town pub with a warm welcome, good ales and a good, reasonably priced menu. Above average.
