Originally The York, this downmarket corner hotel does B&B as an alternative to Butlins. There is a large paved seating area at the front from which to enjoy views of the delivery vans and other traffic fighting its way through the busy town centre. Inside, the downstairs rooms have been opened out to form a single large bar with several TV screens, various chesterfield and other seating huddles, gaming machines and a gas fire in a brick chimney. At one end is a pool table, the other a pizza servery. There are a couple of bar stools at the counter, though this wasn’t a very comfortable place to sit due to constant interruption from grumpy staff and entitled customers haranguing them. There was no real ale – the keg options were Guinness, Estrella, five from Thatcher’s, John Smith’s, Carlsberg and Korev. Dull pop music was being played far too loud, a cacophonic counter to the screaming baby about twenty feet from us. It’s expensive for the area, so I’d avoid if possible.

Large open plan catering for families and the overspill from Butlins. The football was on when I called. I had a pint of Tribute which was far too cold.

Called in yesterday and chose St Austell Tribute and Exmoor Ale costing £3.25 for 2 halves. It was a large open room with dining. Outside seating.

Tends to get packed out with drunken chavs in the Summer (but where in Minehead doesn't?) simply because the lager is cheaper than Butlins and the seating area outside is awash with baseball caps, shell suits and tattoos. Out of season is far nicer. The food is pedestrian and, alas, expensive but at least the ales (Exmoor and St Austell) are well kept. Approaching average (out of season). Ignore the fanciful 10/10 of the previous sole review - no way is this the perfect pub, that just doesn't exist!
