A village pub which appears to be a throwback to a 1950s soap opera. It’s a 19th Century hamstone building, has no parking of its own and has a small garden at the back and a smaller pleasant garden at the front. The single bar is dated and ready for a refit and replacement of the worn carpet, though there is an impressive stone fireplace at one end which does give it some character. That aside it was homely and welcoming, to a point. Sadly the beams, which were supposed to do the same I imagine, are fake. The clientele are mostly elderly - especially the annoying yappy terrier who was getting closer to death than the humans but didn’t realise it - presumably because their beer prices are 10 – 15% higher than other pubs in the area, so the younger village population travels elsewhere. The staff were rather inefficient, but not in a quaint way despite their age – it is easy to see after whom the pub is named. Food was home cooked, traditional pub grub, reasonably priced and it came on a plate – a nice change around here where bits of scrap timber are often used instead. The ales on were Otter, Reel Ale and Hop Circle, plus Burrow Hill cider. The beers weren’t great – certainly not good enough to justify their continued GBG entry. It’s a decent village pub, OK if you happen to be in the village already but I wouldn’t go too far out of my way to come here. 6

Another visit on Monday night. Still unchanged (in a good way I must add) with that unidentifiable quirkiness that sets these types of pubs apart from featureless refurbished ones. 3 Real Ales, Cottage Atom, DBC Jurassic and Moor Illusion. The latter was a new beer, a so called black IPA at 4.5%, an interesting beer although you either love it or hate it. (November 2010)
UPDATE November 2012, pretty much unchanged, Moor Revival, Plain Ales Sheep Dip and Bays Poppy Days on Handpump. Burrow Hill Cider also available.

Clearly a village pub, well used by the regulars (who completely ignored us strangers) but a peculiar welcome from the landlord whose sense of humour appears to be an unsubtle mix of country yokel combined with schoolboy repartee plus a hint of village idiot. Nevertheless the ales, both local brews, were spot on and well kept; Will's Neck from the Quantock Brewery and M.G.B. from the Cottage Brewing Co. Apart from a good range of steaks the menu is pedestrian and limited to pub grub, all with chips and peas - the menu actually states that fresh vegetables are only served on Sundays or with large pre-booked parties! However the food was well-cooked, the portions generous and the value very good. On the upside - a small pair of scissors were provided to cut the packets of various sauces, on the downside the various sauces were in packets. Overall just what you'd expect to find in a no-frills village pub - therefore an average 5/10.

I wish more pubs were like this one, friendly service, good beer, good food in large portions. Had the Moor beer which was in good nick. Enjoy.
