Previously The Galleries, now it has dropped all pretence at being a decent pub and markets itself as a wine and cocktail bar. The layout is still much as described by Blackthorn, below, though the décor has gone down hill a bit since then. The front room has a disco podium, while the main bar is a bit o a wannabee beach bar but without the sand, sea or sophistication. The barman was curt and monosyllabic, certainly not welcoming, to the point that three bikers who came in made it clear that they were leaving and trying elsewhere. The only other customers who remained for a drink were a family group with very strong Dudleigh accents, so presumably they didn’t realise that there are much better pubs nearby. No real ale or cider, just Guinness, Staropramen, Thatcher’s Gold, Los Peros, Ambr Cider, Alpacalypse, Doombar, and 2 house lagers of dubious provenance, On The Rocks and The Gorge. Not worth the effort.

A decent looking pub at the foot of Cheddar Gorge, there is elevated patio to make the most of the views as well as a conservatory for when it’s not quite warm enough to sit outside.
Unfortunately though, once you get inside it’s really a bit of a disappointment. It all looks a bit tatty with wood effect lino on the floor, shabby cream paintwork and stained seating. The pub consists of three fairly narrow rooms, with the central one housing the bar counter and a pool table in one to the left. Some contrasting grey paint was on the timberwork and the radio was on a little too loudly. Unsurprisingly it was very quiet on our recent early evening visit, with the couple running it sat outside on the patio having a fag and one other person in the conservatory. We had planned on eating, but the kitchen closes at 5:00pm and several other potential punters left whilst we were there.
Beers on tap were Wadworth Horizon and Butcombe, whilst the ciders were a trio from Thatcher’s – Gold, Haze and Cheddar Valley. All in all I can see little reason to visit here unless it perhaps to have a pint sat outside in the sun.
