More county hotel than country pub, this 15th Century inn still offers B&B and doubles as a restaurant. It is currently owned by GK amd operated as a family business. There is a small courtyard at the back with limited parking, but not much by way of garden. Inside, there are several small rooms, including two bars and various dining areas, with no formal layout, and it feels labyrinthine. There are several original architectural features on display including inglenooks, structural timbers and stone floors. The main bar is cosy and looks out at the historic town centre. We initially felt a bit out-of-place as it appeared mainly to cater for elderly tourists and families, but one in the bar we found it had a good local atmosphere and we were soon chatting to the regulars and their assorted dogs. On the bar were Stan’s cider, GK IPA, Wadworth’s 6X and Quantock Ale. The ales were in very good condition. Food was upmarket pub grub, plus a specials board, at higher than average prices, while the beer prices were slightly above average. Overall a pleasant experience and I’d be very happy to come back.
