A large picturesque 16th Century roadside pub on a stretch of road bypassed by the main road. There is a carpark at the back from which you descend through a series of garden terraces to the pub itself. The garden is impressive – a series of large terraces with, amongst other things, a stage for live acts, a barbecue area, fishpond, pavilion and lawned areas with tables and benches. The pub has a convoluted interior with various rooms on different levels surrounding a central servery. Food is freshly cooked, mainly pub classics and a few specials. This is no tourist trap though – it’s a lively, welcoming local which looks after its regulars and welcomes passing trade. There’s a convivial atmosphere and the beer is good, though the selection is limited – only Otter on draft, plus Wilkin’s Cider. It’s a surprisingly good pub given its location, and I foresee my stopping here again when I’m passing.
