A traditional town pub occupying the last 2 houses in a Victorian terrace right by the railway station. The railway forms one side boundary, the flyover into town the rear. There is a sheltered garden at the back, and a tiny covered smoking area at the front. Inside, the front rooms have been knocked through to form a single room, though one end is more comfortable and better decorated; this is known as The Cottage Room. The remainder is basic and forms a public bar area with a pool table, dartboard, gaming machine, juke box and TV showing live sports. There is also a skittle alley at the back which hosts occasional live music acts. There was a nice local feel to the place, the staff were welcoming and the locals tolerant of strangers. Fresh rolls were available behind the bar. There was only one ale on, Butcombe original, which was in reasonable condition. Worth dropping in for a quick one while waiting for a train.
