A Georgian former coaching inn which has been bypassed as the main road route through the town changed, making it a rather decaying backstreet. It is now a decent ale pub which does a very nice selection of ciders, and it’s probably Bridgwater’s only proper music venue. The two downstairs rooms have been knocked through to form a single large bar which has a rough division across the middle where the two levels are joined by steps. The former stable yard is now a small enclosed garden with tables, chairs and barbecue facilities. It’s basic, Spartan and spit and sawdust without the sawdust, but the atmosphere is welcoming and convivial. There are tv screens – switched off when we visited – and various gaming machines, plus a pool table and dartboard. There were 9 different ciders on offer, most boxed, one in a polypin. In addition, there were 4 ales – Exmoor Gold, Cotleigh IPA, Yeovil Ruby and Glastonbury Golden Chalice. The staff were very welcoming, the locals were chatty, the beer was excellent. An essential inclusion in a town crawl, lots of fun to be had here, and it’s on the 2018 Somerset Ale Trail.
