Under new ownership since Blackthorn’s review, below, the pub was undergoing refurbishment when we visited. The rooms’ layout hasn’t changed, there is seating at the front outside, and the small car park at the side is still in operation. The pool table has been removed but is expected to be replaced later this year. Similarly, food wasn’t available due to the kitchen being refurbished. The landlord and landlady were friendly, chatty and clearly passionate about their pub, while the locals were welcoming and happy to engage in friendly banter, and we were well looked after. Two brand new handpumps on the bar but only one cask on at the moment, Bath Gem, which was in excellent condition. Also on were Madri, Guinness, Fosters, Moretti and Thatcher’s Gold. I’m keen to come back later when it’s more established and the food is on.

This is a proper pub situated right in the centre of the village, and seems to be everything that a decent local should be. The emphasis is on drinks rather than food, although there is a decent looking “pub grub” menu served up until 8:00pm with most of the meals being very reasonable at around the £6 mark.

Lots of pub games in evidence, with the right hand bar being dominated by a pool table, plus darts and table skittles. The pub was quite busy on a recent Wednesday night due to a table skittles match against the Yew Tree (incidentally, the landlady from the Yew Tree had driven her team over in a minibus! How's that for great service from your local? I think a few more pubs ought to take up that idea).

Beers on this occasion were Butcombe and Ringwood Best. Ciders were Thatcher's Gold and Traditional.
