Located a short stroll downhill from the town centre, this is located adjacent to the former railway line and although not actually the station house it clearly takes a lot of inspiration from the railway in terms of it’s name, décor and artefacts.

Internally it’s quite cosy, with a long bar running along the front of the pub although divided in to sections with some remnants of walling having been left, as well as wooden partitioning with etched glass. To the left was a very cosy snug with made to look like a cabin from an old train carriage, with etched “First Class” glass on either side, elegant wood panelling and a fitted Chesterfield bench seat. Not quite so train related were a selection of gardening implements, many Camra accolades and a beer barrel. Flooring was a mixture of old wooden boards and red quarry style tiling, whilst the walls were part cream plasterwork along with further oak panelling. The Pullman Room at the rear was a little more traditional with carpet on the floor, wood cladding on the lower part of the walls, an old fireplace off to one side and an oil painting or two on the walls.

Beers on tap were Bass, Thornbridge Sperry’s Whistle, Brewsters Hophead, Pheasantry Best Bitter, Brunswick Rocket Gold, Oakham Inferno, Bradfield Farmer’s Blonde, Titanic Plum Porter, Everard’s Kaleidoscope Gold and Everard’s Tiger, the latter of which went down very well. Another half dozen keg options were also available. Ciders too were well represented with Farmer Jim’s Farmyard Perry, Rosie’s Pig, Lilley’s Mango, Celtic Marshes Alice, Cockeyed Cockbirds, Inch’s and Thatcher’s Gold, the latter of which also went down very well. All in all, a cracking pub and well worth taking the small detour to get to.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Final Whistle

Partly opened-out inside, but the former Newcastle Arms retains a very traditional, multi-room interior around the central servery. It also has an interesting courtyard beer garden to the rear with plenty of railway memorabilia, with the separate Locomotion bar / functions room at the back. Beers such as Oakham Citra, Everards Tiger, Brewsters Hophead (£3.50) and Atmospheric Refraction from Wilde Child available from eight of the many handpumps.

The Final Whistle, formerly the Newcastle Arms is a project WIllaim pub a five miniute walk out of Southwell’s Main shopping street. It sits on the former site of Southwell’s railway line and the outside fences have been made to look like a station Platform. I say it is a project William pub bit unlike their other pubs this one has now recently had is pub sign branded as Everards so whether the brewery under the Project William scheme for this pub have pulled out I am not sure. Either way aside from the two Everards beers there were many guest beers including offerings from Leatherbitches, Salopian, Oakham and bass as well as others over the 8 hand pulls. We had the Oakham Inferno on the slightly steeper side for £3.60 but this was superbly kept and was the pint of the day. There is a lovely outside grassy seating area with lots of tables and another outside area in the centre of the pub that on my visit was used for a wedding reception. The pub is largely wooden floored traditional boozer style with many rooms but not for diners as they don’t do food which I like to see in a proper pub. Along with the crown in Beeston the best project William pubs and probably the best pub in Southwell and well worth a visit.

Old Boots left this review about The Final Whistle

Delightful piece of Victorian fakery much lauded by the Camra whallers, good range of very well kept beers, five pulls in each of two bars, different in each, a very decent Draught Bass, and Everards Tiger amongst them. Lots of wood, quarry tiles and panelling as decor. The garden is based on a railway station. A real well preserved Midland Railway Company station building is across the road and the old track bed is just about visible.

Really unique pub. A real time-warp, with railway memorabilia and pictures, simple decor - and a good variety of beers. The beer garden features a re-creation of a railway station platform. They dont do
full meals yet. Just pork pies, cobs, pies. But, it's a great place to really enjoy a pint, read the
paper and relax. The people behind this pub have put a lot of thought and effort into their venture.
Ideal for walkers doing the robin hood trail. CAMRA rightly recognises this pub of character.

Really enjoyed our visit here yesterday both for the excellent beer inside, and the entertainment from the Morris dancers outside in the superb garden. Multi roomed and we kind of got lost trying to get out. Will be really cosy in the winter in the room with the large fire.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Final Whistle

This pub is a true gem and well worth a visit. Formally known as the Newcastle Arms, the new owners have completely transformed this pub to resemble the former 1920's branch line station, which closed in 1964. You enter to a L shaped lounge and bar with a 1st class snug seating area on the left. The bar has an open fire and plenty of seating. To the rear was the Pullman room with an open fire and high backed waiting room benches. Outside there was a platform and waiting area for drinkers. Ten real ales served and five ciders. I went for the Full Mash ESP, Leatherbritches Cad and Bounder. I also had a crackin ham and salad cob, which was freshly made. Their two other pubs are the Crown in Beeston and the Chesterfield Arms, Chesterfield.
