Open plan Sam's pub (a relatively recent acquisition by their standards as it was owned by Oakwell Brewery until their liquidation) by the rail viaduct. Smart and comfy enough inside without there being much in the way of note. Darts and pool in an alcove off to the rear. No cask, just keg and my Dark Mild was absurdly cheap. A few old codgers in sharing ailments and local gossip with the comedy dour barman. In a poor town for ale pubs, it’s worth having a nose in here as an alternative. 6.5

The White Hart is a Sam Smiths’ pub with a red floral carpet throughout, and to the left of the entrance seating runs under the front windows which are faced by the L-shaped serving counter. To the right of the entrance is a raised seating area, and in the right rear corner by the toilets is a pool table. A dartboard is also hidden behind the counter in the left rear. Unfortunately the SS technology ban is in place and there’s nowhere to hide in here so my notes were limited, although the staff and handful of customers were very friendly and I would have stayed longer if I wasn’t looking for a pub to watch the Monday Night Football.

After a period of closure this pub has been bought by Sam Smiths and, being a classy old building, it seems like the right solution for it. On my revisit, exactly six years after my last, it was hard to be sure what, if anything, had changed. Obviously the beer and food offering, but apart from that any changes must have been minimal or subtle. There's a range of Sam's beers available, but no real ale. If you like Sam's pubs you'll like it here.

Thankfully we've had the smoking ban since the last review was posted. The White Hart is an old stone-built hotel next to the railway viaduct that crosses the town centre. There's just one big room inside, with a big central bar. The furniture and décor are very smart, but not off-puttingly so. The walls are adorned with old photos of Mansfield and some framed architectural drawings.

I would describe the overall feel of the place as welcoming and comfortable, but this may have been helped by the fact that it wasn't crowded. The town centre pubs are concentrated around the market place and this leads to competition, which must account for the fact that the White Hart had Oakwell Barnsley Bitter (in very good condition) for only £1.80 a pint. They also had Oakwell Senior, which I didn't try. Maybe next time.
