Alan Winfield left this review about The Volunteer
The Volunteer is a basic street corner pub that is situated off the town centre on a road to the train station.
Once inside there is a single square shaped room which is divided into two halfs by a wall, there is a pool table near the entrance and a bar billiards table to the rear, the floor is tiled, the left side looked smarter it is carpeted and had comfy bench seating, there was a TV showing a world cup game.
There were no real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Worthington cream crap which was a pretty poor drink, the other beer was John Smiths smooth crap.
There were a few locals in on my early evening visit, this is a proper old school pub, shame about the lack of one real ale.
