Now run as a Craft Union pub, with no real ale. The lass who served me said she's been here two years and they've only had a cask beer on once in that time. This is a striking building, but the interior has been extensively modernised, with different levels to the left of the central bar counter, a tiled area in the front centre where there's a traditional fire place; to the right is a pool table. I went for a half of Guinness. The price tag was £4.45 but my half was £2.40, which is a fairly stiff mark up.

A solid Edwardian exterior leads into a rather brash modern, single room interior. Three pulls with Black Sheep Bitter, and York Guzzler from Masham plus Landlord on the third, the Guzzler was barely acceptable. Decorated with exhuberant wallpaper and carpet, it's on two floor levels with bench and dividers on the upper and a mix of low and high seating and tables elsewhere. Salt of the earth type punters quoffing lager. The pub has a loyalty card scheme, takes the national Camra vouchers and offers a 10% Camra discount (not all at once, I assume)

Busy town pub aimed at drinkers, which might sound obvious but you probably know what I mean. Adequate, but nothing special.

The Griffin is a large pub that is at the bottom end of what looks like a market place but is used as a car park.
Once inside there is a largish single L shaped room with the bar facing, the room is part carpeted and bare boarded, the seating bench seating and small stools, there is a pool table to the right and a raised area to the front left.
There were two real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Black Sheep bitter which was a decent drink, the other beer was Doom Bar.
Food was being served and background music was playing.
I thought this was a pretty decent pub to have a drink in.
