Old Boots left this review about The Royal Oak
A neat old looking place tucked away in the narrow part of the Market Place. Double fronted but opened out to one large room inside, seating areas left and right of the front door. The counter is in a smaller area towards the rear, C shaped with two groups of two pulls plus a couple of low T-Bars and solos. Nothing too exciting, Taylors Landlord and Golden Best, my Golden Best was past its best, usual low end kegs from Heineken including John Smiths Smooth plus of course Guinness. It has a darts board, pool table, machine and a beer garden. Grey plague decor and not much more to say.

Graham Coombs left this review about The Royal Oak
An old town pub that they have tried to modernise and not done a very good job. The decor in shades of grey is too dark and there are various odd features taken from a catalogue that do not really work, like the bit of stone flooring and random furniture. It seems to be mainly aimed at the local youth, with a pool table and sports screens, but it didn't feel right at all. Ales on were Doom Bar, Brakspear's Gravity and Theakston's Hairy Bikers special, which was about as duff as the rest of the pub. They seem to be looking for a new manager - you can only hope.
