A hotel by name but acts very much like a pub, with several rooms to left, right and in front of the central bar counter (to the right is a large stone fireplace, to the left a more modest one). There's plenty of wood panelling, though it looks like a lot of it has been rearranged and repurposed. The overall impression is smart and modern, but with a nod to the past. On the bar are four hand pumps, and as the pub is a regular in the Good Beer Guide I went for the John Smiths Cask, as this beer can be worth drinking when well looked after. It was only decent rather than brilliant - what was I expecting? (See photo for other beers on - the woman serving adopted a glamorous pose when I started taking a photo, but I told her I was only interested in beer.) This is a better than average market square pub and would be worth another visit.

Although a residential hotel the bar is a pub bar with slightly more emphasis on food. The bar is centrally placed along with the bar counter, to each side are dining areas, although with a mix of bench seating and tables and chairs, the carvery is at the back on the left. There are three bay windows with seating looking out onto the Market Place. At the back is a large dining or function room which is also home to a pool table. The décor comprises the usual sort of stuff but with a wooden giraffe and nice drawings of the local area. Three handpumps dispensing nicely kept local ales from Wensleydale and Black Sheep, the range of kegs is the standard John Smiths, Guinness, Strongbow and Fosters type. Jolly staff cater well to a middling sort of clientele.
