The grey and white painted exterior and the black sign told me at once this was a Craft Union pub, before I was even close enough to read the logo. On entering I thought at first that this was going to be one without real ale, but it turned out that two regulars were sat in front of the two hand pumps on the front end of the bar (the main stretch of the bar counter then facing left as it recedes into the depth of the building). The choice was between Theakstons Lightfoot and Timothy Taylor Landlord - I went for the latter, which was ok but not by any means impressive. It's good to see real ale on in this group's pubs, but in my experience there's a lot of lager being drunk in them, and in this case the two bar blockers were on Guinness!

Real Ale Ray left this review about Market Tavern
This is a basic one room pub, with a timber floor throughout and a gloomy looking bar on the right hand side, as you enter. They advertise real ale, out front, but once through the doors be prepared to be disappointed. There were two pumps on the bar, one was turned back and the other was a John Smiths.

We walked into this pub in the centre of Knaresborough as it advertised real ales. They didn't have any despite having 4 handpumps. We left.

Old Boots left this review about Market Tavern
I was struck by the smell of disenfectant as I entered this fairly standard town pub, which is not as bad inside as the outside suggests. Brown tables and chairs with bench seating, the bar front has a rather nice blue tiled freeze. Part boards, part carpeted floor. There is a raised area at one end with a pool table but is also used as a stage for the regular live music here. Four pumps with only a John Smiths Cask clip although there were some Black Sheep beer mats on the tables so perhaps guests are not unknown. Not even JS Cask on sale when I visited so I can't comment on beer quality, the keg offering is much like any other Knaresborough pub; John Smith's smooth, Guinness, Stella, Strongbow, Heinekin, Carling etc. The staff were fine and the few punters seemed OK.

I would recommend this pub to anyone. The host, Eugene is a great guy and keeps a good pint of beer. Excellent accommodation too. Right in the heart of Knaresborough. Well worth a visit.

The Market Tavern is tucked away just off the market place and it looks a bit gaudy from the outside.
Once inside it is a fairly basic one roomed pub and there were two real ales on here i had a drink of Black Sheep bitter and this was a decent drink the other beer was John Smiths cask.
