Former John Smith's pub now opened out despite the two lobby doors suggesting lounge and public bar options. The four hand pumps are on the left hand side (see photo). I had a half of Hobgoblin Gold on the recommendation of two bar hangers - at least I knew it was going to be drinkable (NBSS 3).

Close to the station and notably busy on a night when many of its nearby competition in this heavily pubbed town were quiet. Porch entrance with doors to the old lounge and public bars, however once inside the distinction is muddied as they have been knocked through at the rear. The old lounge area has brown and cream swirly carpet, padded fabric bench seating and no piped music. The opposite is true...opposite. There’s a pool table in the rear room. Four pumps and all on; Wold Top Anglers, Great Newsome Prickly Back, Robinsons Dizzy Blonde and a welcome sighting of Theakston Old Peculiar (fine) which was probably heading toward barrel end. A lively atmosphere and a good mix of people inside. Not GBG listed but in other places, probably would be.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Telegraph
A well run pub this one with a beer board outside, listing their four real ales. You enter the pub via a small Victorian tiled lobby. The interior consists of one room, with a half moon shaped servery situated along the main entrance partition. The right hand side of the pub had a log burning stove and looked to be the original bar side. The left hand side was more comfortable and this was the original lounge side, with some oak panelling along the window wall. The rear area housed a pool table. We went for the Colchester Brewery Jack Spitty, a good well kept ale.
