CAMRA National Inventory listed coaching inn and it lives-up to it; a tidy cosy place with a traditional interior with lots of sanded wood panelling via a be-staircased lobby entrance. Four on, 2x GK, Fuller's ESB and Osset Calista (NBSS 3) and easily the best pub in town, full-to-bursting and a convivial atmosphere. Had to gun my beer so I could make the train back to KL which was shame as I’d have liked a relaxed couple in here.

A good looking coaching inn,go through the courtyard to find the entrance to both the hotel and the bar, while beyond is the oldest part of the building with most of the accomodation. The second entrance door to the bar is an unusual half door. The interior is a single square room with lots of wood panelling which has all been scrubbed clean ,leaving a pine affect rather than the more usual dark wood stain colouring. There are two fireplaces, the best to the left with a curved chimney breast. The furniture is all very trad, there is no muzak or machines and the only sound apart from bar room chatter was the ticking mantelpiece clock.Regulars gather on bar stools ,and there was a polite welcome from the guv'nor.
There is a very fine wooden staircase in the main lobby where the loos are situated ,and much exposed timber.
At the bar this GBG regular will have Adnams Southwold Bitter, Greene King IPA and Abbott as permanent ales together with two guests which on my Wednesday evening visit were Lacon's Legacy (decent) and Beeston's Worth the Wait (slight tang at end of pint).I was a bit disappointed with the range of ales with a lot of similar low ABV bitters, but this is still the best pub for real ale in Downham Market.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Crown Hotel
Reasonable, if small, bar inside a traditional coaching inn. Not particularly obvious from the street, but worth looking out for.
